Laptop Repair: When You Want
To Tackle It Yourself.

When your laptop goes on the fritz it takes a little courage to decide to fix it yourself. While laptop repair is not much different from repairing a desktop computer, it may seem really daunting to have to open up a laptop case. However the construction of laptop cases with multiple trays or trapdoors really allow for easy access to hard drives, the CD-ROM and DVD drives, memory chips and wireless cards. And any parts you may need can be easily found on the Internet or even ordered directly from your laptop's manufacturer.

So lets get started. Firstly you will have to determine what is wrong with your laptop. Is it a software problem or a hardware problem? More often than not problems with a computer are related to software problems. Is there is a virus or spyware program taking over the computer, using a good anti-virus or anti-spyware program will quickly help clean this type of problem up. Windows also has a System Restore feature that you can use to restore your computer to the state it was in prior to the spyware getting onto your laptop, although this method may not always be successful.

You can also try to reformat the hard disk. This means wiping off all the applications and files stored on your computer, so backing up is absolutely required. It's could also be possible that your operating system may just need repair. Usually you can insert the install disk and choose the "repair" function, on Windows XP for this type of problem.

How can you tell if the problem is hardware related? To make sure you have a truly damaged piece of hardware and not just a conflict with another component, you can simply run some diagnosis software on you computer. There are many software applications available to help you with this and often such software comes pre-installed on your laptop. Windows has diagnosis software such as Disk Defragmenter and System Tools to let you see if there are any conflicts or any hardware components that are not working properly.

And also making laptop repair so much easier is the quantity and quality of parts and service available online today. Vendors of laptop parts such as drives, memory, wireless and networking cards, will almost always provide detailed instructions on how to remove the old components and install the new ones. Some vendors will even provide online video tutorials. But if you still feel like you need even more information just contact your laptop manufacturer, they will often work with you over the phone to help you in replacing a component.

However do always please make sure that by doing any laptop repair yourself you are not violating the terms of any warranty you may still have in place. Sometimes simply opening the case can instantly void your warranty. .

And always remember, if you simply feel comfortable in repairing a desktop computer, a laptop repair is just as simple. And with the products and instructions available from parts vendors and all the other sources mentioned above, you should be able to handle any basic laptop repairs easily for yourself.
